THE OBSERVER HAS NO AD REVENUES, INVESTORS OR FUNDERS. IT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED AS A NONPROFIT NEWSPAPER FOR THE COMMON GOOD BY CATHERINE ROURKE SINCE 2007 WITHOUT INCOME. IT IS HER JOURNALISTIC GIFT TO SEDONA, AMERICA AND THE WORLD TO UPHOLD PUBLIC SERVICE JOURNALISM, FOR PEOPLE NOT PROFIT, IN AN ERA WHEN THIS IS UNHEARD OF BY A NEWSPAPER.

Catherine Rourke is a bona fide professional journalist with 34 years of experience, including several years as an editor and columnist at the Sedona Red Rock News. Recipient of a distinguished "Community Journalist of the Year" award for her Invisible Sedona series, she founded the Observer in 2007 in order to distribute the truth about socioeconomic issues in the Verde Valley and stories that were being censored, ignored or neglected by local media.

Five years later, in 2012, the paper serves a national and global audience of enthusiastic readers who agree with the Observer that, in order to create change in our world, we must change the media first.

We shun advertising and forsake its revenues to preserve the purity of our editorial content in the public interest. As such, we operate at our own expense and rely on public contributions to stay afloat.

We believe the time is long overdue for reinventing the media so that it truly serves the public interest instead of corrupt power brokers.

As such, we invite our media colleagues and professional associations to review our Journalism Code of Ethics and to lend moral support of our mission in restoring truth and integrity to the profession.

We welcome letters and written endorsements from professional journalism associations, media reform institutions, social justice organizations, labor unions, universities and academic institutions and any other individuals who believe that newspapers should serve as a voice for all people and uphold the moral responsibility of the press to promote social reform.
